Text 1
W: Peter, what do you think of the speech? I think it’s inspiring.
M: I don’t find it inspiring at all. Quite the contrary, I just want it to be over with.
Text 2
W: Please give me a second. I’ll see whether Dr. Banks is available.
M: OK.
W: Sorry, he’s with a patient right now. It’s probably going to be about another 30 minutes. Would you mind waiting a little longer?
M: I’ve been waiting since 8:20 and it’s been half an hour.
Text 3
M: Hi Mary, I’m on the train for a business trip. I won’t be able to meet you in town this afternoon. I’m afraid I have to work late. Really sorry.
W: That’s Okay Mike, let’s arrange something for next week.
Text 4
M: I’m so sad. I don’t know anyone here and I’m homesick. But don’t tell my mum and dad. They might be worried.
W: Oh, I won’t. They’d probably take the next flight to New York and come to see you if I do that.
Text 5
W: Have you been here long?
M: No, I have been here for two days.
W: How long are you staying?
M: Another three days.
Text 6
W: Now the key to recovering after hurting your back is to avoid lifting things.
M: I see. Can I play football?
W: I suggest that you take two weeks off. Do you go to the gym?
M: Yes, three times a week.
W: If you do, avoid lifting any weights. If you want to go for a run or jog, it’s okay.
M: Okay. Does this happen often?
W: It does. Usually, the reason why problems like this occur is that you haven’t warmed up properly.
M: I never warm up.
W: Then you should start doing it. It will reduce the risk of being hurt and help you work out better.
M: Thank you, doctor.
W: You’re welcome.
Text 7
W: I think we got everything for the new term. Pencil case, Rulers, note books. Can you think of anything else?
M: Um, how about pencils?
W: Oh, you know what? You just reminded me that I completely forgot to get pencils for art class. Let’s make a list now, shall we?
M: Yeah, I guess we have to.
W: Okay, we can start with pencils. We’ll need five or six pencils.
M: And ten paint brushes and some paints.
W: And we’ll probably need some glue and a knife. I’m sure the art teacher will let us know if we need anything else.
M: Probably, yeah. Say, do you mind picking my stuff up for me? I can’t go out now. I am waiting for an important call. I’ll treat you to an Ice cream tomorrow.
W: Ugh, fine.
Text 8
W: Aren’t you going to say “hello” to me?
M: I beg your pardon? Susan. My Gosh! Is it really you?
W: Well, I’m not a ghost.
M: I’m so glad to see you. Are you going to the meeting, too?
W: Of course. I didn’t expect to meet you on this train. I was feeling very nervous about going there all by myself.
M: I had no idea you were coming. Er… what are you busy with these days?
W: Nothing different. What about you? Do you still work there? Such young people like you should have a bright future!
M: I’m considering working somewhere else, but I haven’t decided yet.
Text 9
W: Tom, I wonder what drinks you will take when you exercise too much? I’m looking for something to keep me awake at night.
M: Sarah, you want to watch basketball games, right? Well, for this purpose, I think Red Bull is the best.
W: Really? Hm, I’ve tried it several times, but it doesn’t work for me. Besides, I also find it very sweet.
M: Yes, that’s true. They put a lot of sugar in it. But it is sugar that gives us energy.
W: I don’t know. I prefer to have something salty, or even bitter, such as soda water. I’m not a big fan of chocolate, or cakes.
M: That’s a pity. I have a big bar of chocolate in my bag, and I was thinking of sharing it with you.
W: Oh, OK. I can take some. I haven’t eaten anything the whole day. I feel tired and sleepy …What chocolate is it?
M: It’s called Milka, and it originated in Switzerland. It’s my sister’s favorite chocolate. My father bought it from the airport yesterday.
W: Great. Thanks. Wow, it’s so tasty! I like it! Do you think it’s possible to find it in other shops around town?
Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. My name is Sam Thomas. I’m from WSp, short for Worldwide Students, project. It is a service organization which was setup to improve international understanding. Now we’ve got volunteers from 30 different countries working around the world. If you’re interested in joining us, I’d like to tell you about some of the projects. There are 3 kinds of projects to choose from: short-term projects, lasting 2 or 3 weeks, medium-term projects lasting between 1 and 6 months and long-term projects, which can be up to a year. The first project I’d like to tell about is in Japan. It’s a village improvement project. You’d be working with local people. So, you need knowledge of Japanese for that. It is for 3 weeks. The next one is a children’s holiday center in Poland. The work includes painting rooms, gardening and things like that. It’s a medium-term one lasting 6 weeks. The final project is for the medical students here. There is a placement in a center for disabled children in India. You’d be providing medical care there. You’ll work 6 months there. So you can get plenty of experience and do something for the disabled children.
