  听力原文

  Text 1

W: When will the party begin?

M: At seven o’clock pm. But I heard people in this country don’t like being on time, so I plan to get there half an hour later than that.

  Text 2

W: Waiter, can you come here for a moment? I’m afraid you’ve made a mistake. This isn’t what I ordered.

M: So sorry. I’ll check it.

  Text 3

W: Excuse me, sir. Could you tell me how I can get to the city library?

M: Are you driving or taking public transportation?

W: Well, I spent the whole day yesterday driving to see all the sights, so today I think I’d like to go by bus.

M: Why don’t you walk with me? I’m heading in the direction where you can catch the first bus you’ll need to take.

  Text 4

M: Mary is very smart and she has made great progress in her study.

W: Yes. The reason is that she always picks other people’s brains.

  M: That’s right.

  Text 5

M: Andy’s eyes are closing. I’m going to take him to bed before he falls asleep on his plate.

W: OK. I’ll get his bed ready and then you can carry him upstairs.

  Text 6

W: Hello, is Mr. Miller here? I had a talk with him online and he asked me to come here to talk about the job today.

M: Sorry, our storekeeper is out now. I am John Brown, his assistant. He told me something about you. Are you Miss Lee?

  W: Yes.

M: Okay, actually we have several vacancies for casual workers. You’re new to Seattle, right?

W: Yes, I’m an exchange student from China. But I can work here in my free time. I once worked in a restaurant, serving food, washing dishes and so on.

M: Okay. Let me tell you about the job. Basically, we need somebody to work about 10 hours a week. We have two positions available. One is to make fried chicken, and the other is to make deliveries. Since you’re new here, you can start by packing fried chicken. What do you think?

  W: Okay.

  Text 7

W: Hello, how may I help you?

M: Oh, I’m calling to see what flats you have for rent at the moment.

W: Right. What kind of flat are you looking for?

M: Well, it’s for myself and two friends. It needs to have at least three bedrooms. Actually, we’d prefer a fourth room for storage.

W: OK. Are you interested in any particular area?

M: Well, the city centre would be ideal for me and Chris, but we are also considering the west suburbs. Actually, Phil would prefer that. We’ re not interested in the north or the east of the city.

W: Well, I’m afraid there are only two that might interest you. The first one is in Bridge Street, very close to the bus station. It’s got three bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a large living room. It’s £450 a month. But there’s no shower, and that location can be noisy.

M: What about the other one?

W: This one on Hills Avenue is very modern. It’s got four big bedrooms and a spacious living room. It has good facilities, including a shower. It’s £800 a month.

M: That sounds a bit more than we can afford.

W: Well, I can send you all the details, and you can decide if either one is worth a visit.

  M: Thanks.

  Text 8

M: Good afternoon. Can I help you with anything?

W: Yeah. Can I look at this ring?

M: Sure. Let me get it out for you. What is your size?

W: I believe I’m a six. But I’m not choosing for myself. My mom’s birthday is coming, and one of my friends suggested I send her some jewelry. She is a seven.

M: I see. Here you go.

W: Do you have any necklace that would go well with this?

M: Actually, we have many to choose from. They are over there.

W: This necklace is a little short. Do you have one that is longer?

M: Yes. Why don’t you try this one on?

W: This one is much better. Can I try on the ring with this necklace?

  M: Sure. Here you go.

W: If you don’t mind me asking, how much do they cost?

M: The ring is $1,500. But the necklace ranges from $600 to $3,000, which mainly depends on its quality. Of course its size and length also count.

  Text 9

W: So where do you work, Mr King?

M: I used to work at a college, but I left my work there two years ago. Now I’m working for a research center. We often do research on wild animals.

W: What’s your latest research about?

M: It’s about African wild dogs in Botswana. We found that wild dogs there vote in groups.

W: Really? It sounds like a joke. You must be kidding!

M: No, I’m not! We found it hard to believe, too. But our research really shows that after socializing, the pack would decide whether to hunt.

W: So how do they vote?

M: Well, whether the dogs would actually go on a hunt is decided by the number of sneezes. The more the dogs sneeze, the more likely it is that the pack would look for a meal.

W: So how did you do the research? Did you go to the wild to observe the wild dogs?

M: Yes. We arrived in Botswana on March 10th and spent two weeks there.

W: That must have been hard work.

M: Yes, but I loved my time there.

  Text 10

The holiday season is coming up and many cultures give gifts for different holidays. I’m not really good at choosing gifts for people, though. Because every time I go and buy something for someone, I want to buy something that I like and I would think that it would look good on them or something. But then my friends don’t really like the gift so much because it doesn’t suit them. For example, I bought a pair of earrings for a friend and then I realized that she doesn’t really like jewelries, so she never wore it. It’s kind of hard to know what they want. Actually, for that reason, I don’t like giving gifts at all. I think it’s because of my background, like studying economics. It’s just, to me, inefficient. You’re buying something, you don’t know if they really want it and they say, “Oh. It’s the thought that counts.” You waste time finding the gift and then you give them the gift and maybe they don’t use it. So I’m not a big fan of gift giving. Even for birthdays. And for me, if it were my birthday, I would have someone make a card for me. It would have more value than someone buying gifts for me anyway.
