Text 1
W: Did you go to the live pop concert last Friday?
M: Oh, yes. It was supposed to start at 1:30 pm, but it was delayed 15 minutes.
Text 2
M: How are you feeling today?
W: Nothing changed, sir. The headache is pretty much the same as before.
M: Now take this paper and go to the test room for tests.
Text 3
W: I’m going to the park with some friends for a barbecue this weekend. Would you like to come with us, Ben?
M: I’d love to. Wait…I just remembered, I’m going to a baseball game with my dad. He got the tickets a month ago.
W: That sounds cool, too. Enjoy the game.
Text 4
M: What’s wrong with Tom? I noticed you were talking with him that day.
W: Tom is always careless in class.
M: Perhaps you should ask him more questions.
Text 5
M: The computer lab is closed, but I’m working on a very complicated web program.
W: We have a lot of homework for that class, don’t we?
M: Yeah, it’s tough, but I like programming better! Don’t you?
W: No, it’s hard for me. I prefer sciences like biology or chemistry.
Text 6
W: What’s the matter?
M: Oh, I just got my article back after the writing class. Ms. Downs wrote so many comments on it! It’s going to take hours to write a second draft.
W: Do you think she was unfair?
M: No, not at all. In fact, I really like her.
W: Yeah, Ms. Downs is great. She and the art history teacher are the best teachers I’ve ever had here.
M: I agree. I think my writing is really going to improve in this class.
W: Me, too.
Text 7
W: Hi, Lauren. Would you like to go out for dinner some time?
M: Yes, I’d love to, Amy.
W: Okay, how about Tuesday?
M: Oh, sorry. I can’t on Tuesday. I’m meeting Jen for drinks at a British bar.
W: Well, how about Thursday then?
M: uh…I’m afraid I can’t. I’m going to a movie with Mel on Thursday evening.
W: Ooh, you’re so popular! Well, how about Saturday?
M: Oh, I’m really sorry… My brother Joe’s coming on Saturday and I plan to treat him at a Chinese restaurant.
W: Well, that leaves Sunday.
M: Oh, sure, why not?
W: Sunday it is then! How about trying that new Italian restaurant?
M: Great!
Text 8
W: Okay, Phil. Look at this website. It is great. What about your Uncle Ernie? What can we get him?I never know!
M: Well, he’s so difficult to buy for. He doesn’t really like anything!
W: I know. Well, what about a gardening book? He loves gardening, doesn’t he? Look, here are some nice gardening books on the website.
M: Mmm. But we got him a gardening tool last year.
W: Yes. Aha, how about this? Tickets to the flower show.
M: That’s fun. Good, who else?
W: Your brother Gary.
M: Yeah, he’s difficult, too. I always get him something boring, like clothes, because I don’t know what to get.
W: Well, what about this? A live concert ticket?
M: Ooh, that sounds good. Mmm. Maybe I could go with him.
W: Yeah, why not?
M: OK, now let’s have our dinner. I’m really a little hungry.
Text 9
M: Good morning. Today we’re talking to Bangari Naathai, responsible for creating the women’s movement in Uganda and who has just won a Global Peace Prize. Tell us your story, Bangari.
W: Well, ten years ago, I asked the government for 15 million tree seedlings to improve the conditions of our country’s poorest communities.
M: What did they say?
W: I think they thought I was crazy, but they gave me them anyway!
M: And how many trees has the movement planted so far?
W: We’ve now planted more than 20 million trees in 30 different countries across the world. M: And what did you get the Peace Prize for?
W: For promoting economic development throughout Africa.
M: How has the tree project helped the people of your country?
W: Women and children are the most affected by poverty and these are the people I wanted to help. We decided to set up some tree nurseries run by women. This was very successful, and now we have more than 8, 000 throughout the continent.
M: That’s quite an achievement, Bangari. Congratulations and keep up the good work!
W: Thank you, Michael.
Text 10
Good afternoon, everybody, and thank you for giving me your time today. Firstly I’d like to talk to you about the kind of people we’re looking for at Pacific Clothing, and finally I’d like to tell you what we offer you if you come to work for us. All kinds of people work in a wide range of jobs in the clothing industry, from drivers to office workers and artists. Right now we’re on the lookout for scientists, particularly to work with the dyes we use to colour cloth. And to design the patterns and choose the colours which are going to appeal to consumers, we have a strong design team. We’re not looking for any new designers at present but chances may arise in the future. However, at the moment we are looking for engineers to work in the production department. And we’re currently employing accountants. They’re not usually associated with fashion but let me tell you, they perform a vital task. But that’s not to say that, if you have qualifications in another field, for example, sales, we won’t be needing someone like you in the future.
